What goes into a good set of meta tags?

Meta tags live in the <head> of an HTML page. They tell search engines how to list the page, tell social platforms how to render a preview card when the link is shared, and tell browsers how to display it on mobile. A good set covers three audiences at once — Google, social media, and the browser itself.

Ideal lengths

Title — aim for 50–60 characters. Google truncates around 60.
Meta description — aim for 150–160 characters. Gets truncated with an ellipsis above 160.
og:image — 1200 × 630 px is the safest size for Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter's summary_large_image card.
Twitter summary (small) card — 144 × 144 px or larger square.

Should I include the keywords meta tag?

Google stopped using <meta name="keywords"> for rankings in 2009. It's harmless to include but doesn't help SEO. Only a handful of smaller search engines still read it. Leaving it out is fine.

Open Graph vs. Twitter Card

Twitter falls back to Open Graph tags when Twitter-specific tags are missing, but you get more control with dedicated twitter:* tags — especially twitter:card (layout), twitter:site (your brand handle) and twitter:creator (author handle).
