The 4 percentage formulas everyone needs

Every percentage question boils down to one of these four forms. Once you spot which one applies, the arithmetic is trivial:

Percentage of a number: (X/100) × Y. Example: 18% of 1,250 = (18/100) × 1,250 = 225.
One number as a percentage of another: (X/Y) × 100. Example: 45 out of 180 = (45/180) × 100 = 25%.
Finding the whole from a part: (X/Y) × 100 where Y is the known percentage. Example: 72 is 60% of what? (72/60) × 100 = 120.
Percent change: ((new − old) / |old|) × 100. Positive = increase, negative = decrease.

Percent difference vs. percent change

They sound the same but measure different things:

Percent change — directional. "From 80 to 100" is a +25% increase, "from 100 to 80" is a −20% decrease. Use when one value is clearly the starting point.
Percent difference — symmetric. Divides the absolute gap by the average of the two values. Use when comparing two things on equal footing (two measurements, two sales figures).

Common use cases

Shopping: work out the final price of a 20% discount or 10% extra free.
Tax / tip: add 18% GST, 15% service charge, or 20% restaurant tip.
Finance: compute portfolio growth, dividend yield, or loan interest percentages.
Stats: express one count as a share of a total (market share, response rate).
Science: report experimental error as a percent difference between measured and true values.
